Perimeter Institute - Mike Lazaridis Theatre

Lucy Hawking takes us on an extraordinary journey across the universe, in the company of some of the great scientists and explorers of all time, to find out how imagination plays a role in scientific discovery and innovation. Lucy, with her father and other scientists, created a story of two kids with the ability to travel across the known universe. You will hear the author’s inside story of how these creative minds collaborated, stitching science together with fantasy, and transforming an idea into a full-blown book. She will also reveal the surprising results of a survey, especially commissioned for the Perimeter BrainSTEM Your Future is Now Festival on attitudes about science and technology among school-age children. This talk is suitable for families and children from age 6.

Author Lucy Hawking writes adventures stories which aim to make astrophysics, astronomy and cosmology entertaining and accessible to young readers. She has now written four books in the ‘George’ series, working with her father, Stephen Hawking and a range of other high level scientists who contribute their research to the books. The books are published in 38 languages and are popular around the world.

Lucy Hawking studied Modern Languages at Oxford University before going to City University in London to follow a professional journalism training course. Before moving into publishing, Lucy wrote for many newspapers and magazines in the United Kingdom as well as working for New York Magazine in the USA.

In 2007, Lucy was a speaker at NASA’s 50th birthday conference, discussing science, education and space travel. In 2008, Lucy won a prestigious European prize, the Sapio Prize for Popularizing Science. In 2010, Lucy was the inaugural writer in residence at the Origins Project at ASU in the USA where she worked on science and education outreach to school-age students. Lucy has given talks around the world to young audiences, using storytelling to inspire young audiences to engage with science. In July 2013, Lucy worked with Sweet Talk Productions to broadcast her first documentary for BBC Radio 4, Klatt’s Last Tapes, looking at the history of synthetic speech technology.
